Make sure you are not ‘rewarding’ your child for early morning wakings. Rewards can include letting your child watch TV or use a computer – such activities can reinforce early morning waking, even if it seems like a good idea at the time for you to get more sleep.

When you are ready to tackle early morning waking, read this book with your child. Consider using good rewards (stickers, stamps) if your child can stay in their room until at least 6 am.

Nighttime fears or worries are very common in children – especially children with vivid imaginations! These worries can stop children from getting to sleep.  Children can think there are monsters in their bedroom, be worried about noises outside the window, etc. Learning to manage these fears and worries is really helpful for children – and their families.

This book is a fun way to help children worry less at the start of the night. Parents can help children do this by listening to their worries and then gently reassuring them that many of their worries are not real – there are no monsters under the bed!

Help your child with visualisation

Older children can find it hard to get to sleep because they are worrying about things. Visual imagery and relaxation techniques can help take their minds off these worries. These techniques are best suited to children aged 4 years and up.

It’s best to tell children to use this strategy on the floor of their bedroom at a time OTHER than bedtime to start with. The afternoon can work well. This is so that children don’t worry if the technique is not working – something they may do just before bedtime which will make it even harder to go to sleep! In my experience, when this technique works, children start to naturally use it before bedtime. Also, remember not to ask a child about their day just before bedtime….if things haven’t gone so well, this may upset them. It’s best to talk about the day in the afternoon or at dinnertime.
