When is it Safe for Children to Use an Adult Seat Belt?
By law, children must be suitably restrained when travelling in a car. From age seven, a child can legally use an adult seat belt, but if they’re still too small for it to fit correctly, they should continue using a booster seat. The five-step test can help you check whether your child is ready (generally around 145 cm tall):
- Can the child sit with their back against the seat?
- Are knees bent comfortably over the front edge of the cushion?
- Does the shoulder belt sit across the mid-shoulder?
- Is the lap belt across the top of their thighs?
- Can they remain in this position for the whole trip?
If they can comfortably meet all five steps, they may be ready to use the adult seat belt. If not, keeping them in a booster seat gives them the extra height they need for the seat belt to fit correctly.
